The Stanley Cup hopes of the Washington Capitals were dashed by their first-round exit at the hands of the Boston Bruins. This makes the third straight season of not making it past the first round, and fans are probably wondering if their window has closed.
The opening semifinal on Sunday between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the New York Islanders is a best-of-7 rematch from the 2020 Eastern Conference final. Tampa Bay won that match in six games, going on to eventually win the Stanley Cup.
This year’s modified divisions made for a weird playoff format, and the third round highlights that. It’s not the Conference Finals anymore, we now call it the Stanley Cup Semifinals. It also happens that one of the matchups includes Western and Eastern Conference teams prior to the Cup Finals.
The Florida Panthers have nothing to be ashamed about. They had the second-best record in the central division and the fourth-most points in the NHL. The Panthers made the playoffs for the first time in five years, but that euphoria was short-lived as they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round.
The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs: A tale as old as time. After an up-and-down season in La Belle Province, the Canadiens find themselves playoff-bound for the second-consecutive year after a 24-21-11 overall record in the regular season.
With the return of Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov to the lineup, the Tampa Bay Lightning will be more formidable than ever. They will be meeting their in-state rival Florida Panthers for the first time in the postseason.
The victory over the Buffalo Sabres gave the Rangers yet another three-game winning streak, keeping playoff hopes alive. However, as the week went on and they faced the New York Islanders for two games, those hopes slowly started to dwindle.
During the Stanley Cup Playoffs, legends are born as the stakes are raised to the highest level. Coming into the postseason, Nathan MacKinnon was one of hockey’s youngest stars. During the postseason, however, he has taken his game to another level.
Between a sluggish Round Robin tournament and Tuukka Rask opting out, it seemed as if the Bruins playoff run could be short-lived. The Bruins were, however, able to overcome those challenges partly due to the play of David Krejci.
With the NHL playoffs approaching, the Boston Bruins are counting on their secondary lines and younger players to be the difference-makers in the scoring column.
The New York Rangers broke a 54-year drought on this day in 1994. Liz Pendergraft recaps the chilling victory:
