You may not be too familiar with his name, but the person that Burnie Legette has become because of football is one in a million.
Football season is upon us. For many football is a foreign language, and that means you need to learn. In this series, I will try to decipher the terminology the commentators use to improve everyone’s football IQ.
The Philadelphia Eagles 2018 season was very injury-filled, but they used the “Next Man Up” mentality like in their Super Bowl winning season the year prior, and still made it to the Divisional Round of the playoffs. They ultimately fell to the Saints, 20-14, but Nick Foles brought some magic again when Carson Wentz went down for the season with another injury, to will the Eagles into the playoffs. He went 4-1 in the five games he started and threw seven touchdown passes with a 72.3 completion percentage. The biggest question for the 2019 season is whether Philadelphia can stay healthy, especially Wentz. If that happens, the Super Bowl is their ceiling and expectations will be running high.
Another week of preseason games has gone by which means we are one week closer to the regular season starting, as well as roster cuts. Here is another batch of players that have improved their chances of making an NFL roster come week one.
Coming off a very disappointing 2017 season, where franchise quarterback Andrew Luck didn’t take a single snap as he recovered from a complex shoulder injury, the Indianapolis Colts’ started the 2018 season 1-6, including an overtime loss to the Houston Texans. However, Luck shook off the year long rust and the defense picked it’s game up around Defensive Rookie of the Year, Darius Leonard. The Colts to won nine of their last 10 games, including a win over the Tennessee Titans on the final night of the regular season. With a 10-6 record, the Colts got the final wild-card spot in the AFC and defeated the Texans 21-7 in the first round of the playoffs, but fell to the Kansas City Chiefs the next weekend, losing 31-13.
2018 was a forgetful year for the Cardinals. The team only won three games with two coming against the 49ers who were the second-worst team in the league, while the Cardinals were the worst. Their other win came against the Green Bay Packers which forced the Packers to fire Mike McCarthy. The team was plagued by terrible offensive play and an abysmal offensive line. The team is under a full rebuild and will look completely different this year with Steve Wilks fired and replaced by Kliff Kingsbury bringing in a whole new dimension the NFL has never seen.
The Jets had a disappointing 2018 season. The team did not have high expectations, by any means with Sam Darnold in his rookie year but the team only managed to win four games and missed the playoffs for the eighth straight season. Coming off an abysmal year, the offseason was busy and hectic with moves made throughout the organization.
After another disappointing season that saw the Bengals start 4-1 just to end up 6-10. The Cincinnati Bengals finally moved on from Marvin Lewis after a long tenure that saw 0 playoff wins in 15 years.
Pardon my hesitation, but fans of the New England Patriots and fantasy football players should temper their enthusiasm about the return of Josh Gordon. As the saying goes: Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you. We’ve been down this road before with Gordon, and while he’s clearly tried to kick his addiction (no pun intended), he always seems to go back.
Coming off of a drama-filled season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Antonio Brown seems to be continuing this drama with his new team, the Oakland Raiders.
The Carolina Panthers finished the 2018 season with a record of 7-9 and missed the playoffs. The Panthers were looking to improve on an 11-5 season in 2017 and started off strong in 2018 with a 6-2 record. The Panthers then went on a seven-game losing streak, ending their playoff hopes.
