September football is a period when teams shake off the rust and bond as a team. That’s the theory, but several teams are looking like strong candidates for the No.1 overall draft pick in 2020. The Atlanta Falcons have had a terrible start to the season, and at 1-3, they sit rooted in the basement of the NFC South. Sunday’s game is a coin toss for Atlanta, against the Houston Texans (2-2).
The Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons are set to face off on Sunday Night Football tonight with kickoff set for 8:20pm on NBC. The Eagles are coming off a come-from-behind 32-27 victory against the Washington Redskins, while the Falcons are coming off a 28-12 defeat by the hands of the Minnesota Vikings last week. The Falcons didn’t put up any points until the fourth quarter, as they trailed 28-0 after three quarters. Three turnovers (two picks and a fumble) and a blocked punt all led to Minnesota scores, with the Vikings rushing for 172 yards.
Three big questions for all four teams.
As preseason is well underway in the NFL, it is time to take a look at the landscape of the
The Carolina Panthers finished the 2018 season with a record of 7-9 and missed the playoffs. The Panthers were looking to improve on an 11-5 season in 2017 and started off strong in 2018 with a 6-2 record. The Panthers then went on a seven-game losing streak, ending their playoff hopes.
To say the 2018 season did not end the way the New Orleans Saints wanted is an understatement. Much like 2017, one play seemed to derail the Super Bowl dreams of the Saints. Although they did get a little closer last year, making the NFC Championship, the result was nevertheless disappointing. As a Saints fan, I won’t go into what happened the past two years as it is still a little painful as I’m sure it is for my fellow WhoDats. What I will say is this: The Saints are poised to get that ring and put Drew Brees along with Peyton Manning and John Elway as great quarterbacks going out on top.
Ryan Potts predicts two of the four NFC divisions will have new leaders in 2019.
The Buccaneers 2018 season was a roller coaster, to say the least. Jameis Winston started the season suspended so Ryan Fitzpatrick opened the season as the starter. Then, “fitzmagic” happened. They opened the season 2-0 after wins against New Orleans and the then Super Bowl champion Eagles. Once Winston returned, he and Fitzpatrick each traded off the starting role multiple times. After the impressive start, the team stumbled its way to a 5-11 finish, missing the playoffs for the tenth straight year, resulting in the firing of coach Dirk Koetter. Koetter’s replacement is former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, who has the difficult task of taking this team from the NFC cellar to super bowl contenders.
Coming off a mediocre 7-9 record, where they missed out on the playoffs. The injuries hit the Falcons defense hard in 2018, names that included Keanu Neal, Grady Jarrett, and Ricardo Allen. In all Eight players would finish on the IR by seasons end. The team made some big shakeups on the coaching side of things. Letting go of three members of their coaching staff, among them offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian.
Sarkisian never ended up paying off as the replacement to Kyle Shannahan. The Falcons brought back a familiar face in Dirk Koetter to fill the role, Koetter should adapt well into an offense he helped lead to the NFC Championship Game in 2012. Devonta Freeman was a rookie starting behind Steven Jackson the last season, he was in Atlanta. How will they jell together?
