Happy start of the NHL season to hockey fans everywhere. With games now in full swing on a nightly basis, the quest for all 32 teams to capture the Stanley Cup has begun.
Despite a COVID-shortened campaign, Colorado Avalanche fans had enough fun to make it feel like an entire season. With tons of exciting talent and the President’s Trophy in hand, the Colorado season ended badly, once again failing to get out of the second round of the playoffs.
When it comes to elite-level young talent, few leagues in North America can compare with the National Hockey League. Let’s meet the cast in part two of the NHL’s Calder Trophy candidates heading into next season.
After a disappointing run in the playoffs, the Colorado Avalanche turned their eyes toward the draft. Wade Klippenstein is the new Director of Amateur Scouting, and he’s been with the team since 2016. He understands what the franchise’s front office is looking for in a pick.
The Colorado Avalanche are entering the first of two huge years. Their championship window is wide open and have a core that looks to be championship caliber. With a foundation this good also comes important contract decisions.

Enjoying another stellar campaign in 2021, star center Nathan MacKinnon was named a finalist for the Hart Trophy after recording 20 goals and 45 assists in 48 games. Along with this, in his third year with the Avalanche, net minder Philipp Grubauer earned a nomination for the Vezina Trophy. Racking up a .922 save percentage and a 1.95 goals-against average, the 29-year-old finished second in the league with 30 victories in 40 starts.
When looking at the first-round matchups this year, the Blues versus the Avs appears to be the most lopsided. The regular season series was relatively even, with Colorado taking five of the eight games.
With some shoot-out luck in the Carolina 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, we were able to sweep our picks Tuesday. In the other game, Montreal keeps rolling with a 5-3 victory over the Canucks.
