Stoudemire wanted to form a Big 3 with Dwyane Wade and LeBron James in Miami

Jacari McRae | July 13th, 2019

It’s been fourteen days since NBA Free Agency started and we’ve already seen plenty of stars joining forces. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are joining forces with the Brooklyn Nets, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George with the Los Angeles Clippers, and now Russell Westbrook and James Harden with the Houston Rockets. The league has changed since the 2000’s when stars were just trying to compete against each other.

Former NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire appeared on ESPN First Take Friday morning and was asked if he would have considered teaming up with other stars. Stoudemire then brought up how he could’ve ended up with the Miami Heat and joined Dwyane Wade and Lebron James.

“When I signed with the [New York] Knicks, Stoudemire said, “There was a chance for me to play in Miami with Lebron [James] and D.Wade [Dwyane Wade] at the time. But they decided to go with the Chris Bosh move and I went to the Knicks.

And why he didn’t:

“Well, it wasn’t my decision,” Stoudemire added. “I was obviously trying to link up with Lebron at the time.

“If it was my decision, for sure I would’ve loved to play with D. Wade and Lebron in Miami.”

With Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, and Lebron James joining forces in Miami, Stoudemire ended up signing a 5-year $100 million deal with the Knicks. He would go on to play four and a half seasons with the Knicks before being bought out. Stoudemire later joined the Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat before retiring as a Knick in 2016.

The former all-star is currently trying to make an NBA comeback. Stoudemire reportedly worked out for about a dozen NBA teams earlier this week. The Los Angeles Lakers, Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, and New York Knicks were among the teams that watched.
