Stephen Strasburg Returns To Nationals

Daniel Corrigan| December 10th, 2019

The Nationals are bringing back former number one overall pick and 2019 World Series MVP, Stephen Strasburg on a record-breaking seven-year, $245 million contract.

Strasburg’s new deal will make him the highest-paid pitcher in terms of salary and AAV in the history of baseball, for the time being.

Strasburg has been known for his high strikeout numbers, but with some injury troubles along the way. Strasburg is only 30 years and will be the Nationals number two until Max Scherzer shows signs of regression.

The Nationals drafted Strasburg number one overall out of San Diego St., in 2009 for a record four-year $15.1 million contract. Being one of the most talked-about prospects in all of baseball, he made his way to Washington for the first time in June of 2010. In his first start, he went seven innings with only two earned runs and 14 strikeouts.

Injuries really slowed down a hot start to the career of a young phenom. Even with that, he re-signed with the Nationals in 2016 for seven years at $175 million. After a down 2018, Strasburg bounced back with a 2019 that consisted of 3.32 ERA with 251 SO and a WHIP of 1.038.

It all culminated with a magical World Series run for the Nationals where Strasburg won the World Series MVP with 14 IP, only allowing three runs and 14 SO.

Prediction: 35 starts, 225 IP, 18-9, 3.13 ERA, 1.195 WHIP, 245 SO
