Ahead of Saturday’s roster cut-down deadline, there are sure to be many moves that catch people’s eyes and that includes trades. For one player, in particular, his future could be decided this weekend. That player is Josh Rosen.
With Miami’s rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa healthy, the Dolphins have fielded trade inquiries in recent days for former first-round pick Josh Rosen, per league sources. In an upcoming weekend of moves, Rosen could be on the move again.

He has played on the two worst rosters since entering the league with the Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins. Both teams had terrible offensive lines and the Cardinals ended up with the first pick in the 2019 draft. New coach, Kliff Kingsbury gave up on Rosen and selected Kyler Murray. Rosen was shipped to Miami where he was once again met with high expectations. Unfortunately, Miami traded all of their talented players and was seemingly punting the season away. The Dolphins selected Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth pick in the 2020 draft, leaving Rosen searching for answers.
Reports out of Dolphin practices have Rosen excelling in the new offense and surprising the coaching staff. Unfortunately, it could be too little too late and his best option could be to demand a trade as he isn’t in the team’s plans. Below are some potential fits for Rosen in the coming days if he were to get traded.

Atlanta Falcons
Matt Ryan hasn’t slowed down despite being 35 years old. He had a down year last year where he threw just under 4,500 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Ryan’s contract currently runs through 2024 but has potential outs after the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Matt Schaub is the only viable backup and is 39 years old. Rosen is a prime trade target that could sit on the bench and learn from Ryan. He could also start if Ryan got injured.
Detroit Lions
Like Atlanta, the Lions have an aging starter in Matthew Stafford who is 32 years old. While that may not seem too old, the back injury that Stafford had is a concern for the Lions front office. Along with that, he seems fed up with the Lions. Stafford is looking to sell his home in Detroit, something we saw with Tom Brady before that fiasco went down. The Lions signed Chase Daniel during the offseason to be the backup to Stafford this year. David Blough doesn’t belong on the field, as seen by his tape from last year. Rosen would be a perfect addition to the Lions. Unfortunately, there is room for concern that he could be on one of the worst teams yet again if he were to land in Detroit.
Indianapolis Colts
Chris Ballard isn’t afraid to get a young quarterback when needed. When Andrew Luck was injured, he acquired Jacoby Brissett from New England. With the Colts signing Philip Rivers, they remain in the market for a future starter at the quarterback spot. Yes, Brissett remains on the roster but he is a serviceable backup and low-tier starter at best. Indianapolis selected Jacob Eason in the fourth round but he isn’t ready to start. The Colts should target Rosen if the asking price is a late-round pick. This would be the best situation for Rosen.
New England Patriots
Of course, New England is a fit. The Patriots added Cam Newton during the offseason to compete with Jarrett Stidham for the starting job this year. Newton comes with a scary injury history at the age of 31 and was only signed to a one-year contract. Stidham was seen as the future of the franchise before Newton was added and has struggled during practice. Bill Belichick’s relationship with Brian Flores is enough to get the hype started for Rosen to be traded to New England for a late-round pick. Belichick trades late-round picks regularly.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers have seemingly been in the quarterback market for a successor to Ben Roethlisberger for three or four years as Roethlisberger is 38 years old. Over the last few years, the front office has flirted with the idea of getting his successor by selecting Mason Rudolph and Joshua Dobbs (who’s now in Jacksonville). After Roethlisberger got hurt last year, both Rudolph and Devlin Hodges didn’t that they were the future of the Steelers. Like Indianapolis, this is another great landing spot for Rosen. Both teams have great offensive lines and young weapons for him to throw to.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Brady is 43 years old. Behind him, the Buccaneers have Blaine Gabbert who is 30 years old, and Ryan Griffin who is 30 as well and only thrown four passes during the regular season in his career. Tampa Bay is seemingly set to win now but trading for Rosen could set them up for future success as well. The Buccaneers have a young defense and plenty of weapons on offense for Rosen. The only problem is that Bruce Arians could likely retire yet again leading Tampa Bay to hire a new coach who may do away with Rosen as Kingsbury did.
Ultimately, it’s best for Rosen if he gets traded this weekend. He has been giving the short end of the stick numerous times in his two years in the league. Hopefully now is the time that a team finally gives him a fair shot.
