The Philadelphia 76ers are looking to bounce back after a disappointing season. They’re looking to build a good supporting cast around their young stars in Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. To do this, they’ll have to move either Al Horford or Tobias Harris. Unfortunately for the 76ers, that’s going to be hard to do with their huge contracts. There’s been speculation the team may have to part with Josh Richardson. He is on a good contract but could opt out of his $11 million player option for the 2021-22 NBA season.
So, how about sending him back to the Miami Heat?
Defensive Help
Miami’s guard defense, especially at the point of attack, was an issue all season. Richardson is an elite point of attack defender and can shoot from beyond the arc. Unlike his last stint in Miami, he won’t be used as the primary ballhandler. With Jimmy Butler on the team, Richardson could play more off the ball and attack closeouts. On the defensive end, he can also take some pressure off of Butler by taking on the biggest defensive assignment.
The question is what a potential deal would look like. A potential Heat offer may include Kendrick Nunn, Kelly Olynyk, and maybe the 20th pick. This is the kind of offer that’s been discussed by fans and bloggers all summer for star players like Victor Oladipo. While there’s uncertainty that Oladipo can regain his all-star form, there’s none when it comes to Richardson. Miami already knows what it’ll get from Richardson. He’s a Miami Heat player.
Is it Possible?
On paper, this move makes a lot of sense. While adding a big name player is the fun move, the best move may be to add the best fit for next season. Even though Richardson has the $11 million dollar player option for 2021, you can always try to move the contract considering how valuable two-way players are in the league. Keep in mind that this is all speculation. But if Miami has a chance of making this move, they should at least consider it.
