After an 18-year tenure in professional soccer, Sergio Agüero is retiring from the game. The 33-year-old Argentine striker is calling it quits due to heart complications. Agüero had joined Barcelona last summer on a free transfer after a ten-year spell with Manchester City. Although Agüero still had a few more years left in him, there’s no doubt he had an illustrious career and he’s retiring in style.
Earlier this month, Agüero was diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia. After experiencing chest pains during a match against Alavés, Agüero was substituted out and taken to the hospital. He would be ruled out for three months. Agüero only played four games this season with Barcelona, scoring just one goal. Agüero will confirm his retirement at a press conference next week.

A Manchester City Legend
To say that Agüero had a successful run with Manchester City would be a major understatement. Agüero happens to be the club’s all-time leading scorer(260 goals in all competitions) and the English Premier League’s fourth all-time leading scorer(184 goals). In addition, he’s a two-time Manchester City Player of the Year award recipient and seven-time Premier League Player of the Month. Furthermore, he was the Premier League’s top scorer for the 2014-15 season and is a five-time Premier League winner as well as a runner-up of the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League.
A Legend In His Native Argentina
Agüero began his international career at the senior level in 2006 at the age of 18. He represented Argentina in three World Cups, finishing as a runner-up in 2014. In addition, he represented his country at five Copa América tournaments, winning the title last summer.
While in the Argentine youth system, Agüero achieved great success. During his time with the Argentina under-20, he won the FIFA U-20 World Cup twice, finishing as the tournament’s best player and top scorer in 2007. In addition, he was named the winner of the Golden Boy award in 2007. Furthermore, in 2008, he won an Olympic gold medal with the Argentine under-23 team.
Agüero has 41 goals and 101 caps with the Argentine senior squad, making him La Albiceleste’s third all-time leading scorer. He also finishes as Argentina’s seventh most-capped player.
Agüero’s Legacy
It’s truly unfortunate Agüero’s career had to end this way, however, there’s no denying he’s made impact after impact through the years in domestic and international play. His list of accomplishments is endless. A total of 427 goals for both club and country. Everything Agüero has accomplished in his career simply speaks for itself. No doubt, Agüero will go down as not only one of the greatest players of his generation but also as one of the greatest players in history.
