Second-Half Surge Powers UMass Past Holy Cross, 64-50

UMass used a big second half to pull away from Holy Cross 64-50 on Wednesday.

Leading 40-34 with 13:00 remaining, Unique McLean would drill a 3-pointer to spark a 15-4 Minutemen run as they enchanced their advantage to 55-38 with 5:49 left to seize control.

UMass, which led 34-31 at halftime, connected on 11 of 12 free throws in the first half to compensate shooting 39.1 percent from the floor.

Luwane Pipkins led all scorers with 13 points for UMass and McLean chipped in 11.

Holy Cross was paced by 12 points and five rebounds from Jehyve Ford.

The Crusaders, who have dropped five straight, will be back on track Saturday at 3:05 p.m. as they host New Hampshire (2-7).

The Minutemen, who snapped a four-game skid, will remain home as Providence (7-2) comes to town.

More Money, More Problems.

I took a casual poll on whether or not college athletes should be paid or compensated when their respective university uses their image or likeness. The results were not as I expected. Out of about 100 people who responded, 72 of them said that college athletes should not be paid. This sample included people who had played and who were passionate about college athletics, people who were recently out of college and people who have been graduated for a long time. I personally voted that they should be compensated for their image being used for marketing or recruiting and in a way, they are with scholarships. But we all know that scholarships can only help so much.
