The San Francisco Giants select North Carolina State catcher Patrick Bailey with the 13th overall pick in the MLB Draft.
Bailey should earn a $4,197,300 signing bonus as slot money for the 13th overall selection.
Patrick Bailey is a switch-hitting catcher from North Carolina State that hit .302 with 28 doubles, 29 home runs, and 106 runs batted in across three seasons and 477 ACC at-bats.
The Greensboro native was named ACC Freshman of the Year after hitting .321 with 13 home runs during his 2017 season. Bailey was looking at a banner home run season before COVID-19 ended the season prematurely hitting six home runs in his first 54 at-bats for the Wolfpack. Bailey’s consistent contact and raw power from both sides of the plate provide the Giants with a future catcher that could find himself playing in the Bay Area before too long. Bailey is likely a better defensive catcher than Giants’ top prospect and catcher Joey Bart.
Bailey attended Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, North Carolina and was drafted in the 37th round of the 2017 draft by the Minnesota Twins before going to college. Bailey is a good defensive catching prospect with above-average throwing arm which will only help his ascent through the Giants farm system. He’s considered by most scouts as a catcher first prospect but his offensive upside can give him the potential to be All-Star MLB backstop.
