We are well into July and the NFL season is creeping closer and closer. While there haven’t been many practices or workouts to report on, there are plenty of predictions to make and topics to discuss. This is especially true for the San Francisco 49ers. Rookie quarterback Trey Lance is a huge talking point, though he’s not the only part of this team worth discussing.
Will Lance Start by the Bye Week?
False … but very close to true. This is a really hard one to decipher. The 49ers’ bye week comes in Week 6, and they’ll be in quite an interesting spot. They should start off the year 2-0 but could lose their next three games against Green Bay, Seattle, and Arizona. If they don’t go on a three-game slide, Jimmy Garoppolo‘s job should be fine. If they do, Kyle Shanahan has some thinking to do. It will be a close call, but in the end, they shouldn’t rush Lance into play that early.

Does One Receiver Eclipse Seven Touchdowns?
False. This is not including George Kittle. 49ers wide receivers have a pretty unique role on their team. They are do-it-all guys like Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk who aren’t necessarily great at one thing but good at everything. However, with the number of touches to go around and the high amount of running involved in the offense, it would be pretty difficult for any of these guys to go over seven touchdowns. Last year, the high was five, courtesy of Aiyuk. With Samuel coming back fully healthy, it’s hard to imagine anyone eclipsing seven scores.

Will Trey Sermon Have Relevance By the Halfway Mark?
True. To clarify, Sermon will see touches early and often, but when he actually gets meaningful ones is to be determined. Sermon is a great running back option for the 49ers, and with the poor durability of Raheem Mostert and the rest of this backfield, Sermon will have a real opportunity to shine. If he plays to his potential off the bat, he should take over the role as the lead back and perhaps even eliminate the never-ending committee in the Shanahan offense.
Does the Defense Fall Behind Without Robert Saleh?
False. Robert Saleh is an absolutely tremendous coach. The Jets hiring him was an A-plus move by that organization, so obviously a little setback will be in order. However, this unit is far too talented to just fail without one coach. Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, Javon Kinlaw, and others are all young, budding superstars in this league and their cohesion as a unit should be what puts them over the top. While the Saleh move hurts, San Francisco shouldn’t see any major declines in production.
