San Francisco 49ers Stifle Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night

The Green Bay Packers traveled to Levi’s Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 24 to face the San Francisco 49ers in Week 12. The Packers came into the game at 8-2 following a bye week while the 49ers only had one loss, which came at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks. San Francisco dominated Green Bay all four quarters both on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball and came away with the 37-8 victory, securing their lead at the top of the NFC West standings ahead of the Seahawks.

Green Bay opened the game with possession of the ball, but San Francisco ended the drive when Fred Warner sacked Aaron Rodger, forcing a fumble and giving Nick Bosa the opportunity to recover it at the Green Bay two-yard line.

In the next drive, Tevin Coleman took the ball two yards into the end zone to put the 49ers on the board first within the first two minutes of the game. This was just the beginning of the explosive performance from a San Francisco offense that the Green Bay defense couldn’t halt.

The Packers’ offense was unable to move the ball in the first quarter and went three-and-out on multiple occasions. San Francisco put three more points on the board when Chase McLaughlin kicked a 29-yard field goal, adding to the lead. 10-0 was the score at the end of the first quarter.

The first drives of the second quarter were fruitless for both teams as the San Francisco defense stopped Green Bay’s opening drive of eight plays and almost four minutes shaved off of the clock.

The Packers’ defense did put a stop to the 49ers’ momentum in their opening drive when Jimmy Garoppolo was sacked by Za’Darius Smith for a loss of 10 yards. Two plays later, the Niners punted the ball. Green Bay wasn’t able to convert their next drive into any points despite a penalty call on San Francisco that automatically gave the Packers the first down on a critical third down and 25 yards to go.

San Francisco capitalized on their next two drives, first with a 42-yard strike to rookie Deebo Samuel for the second 49ers’ touchdown, and then another McLaughlin field goal to finish out the first half with a score of 23-0.

Even though the 49ers opened the second half with possession of the ball, it was the Packers who would convert their opening drive into finally putting points on the board with just under four minutes left to go in the third quarter. Rodgers connected with Davante Adams for the touchdown, and then again for the completed two-point conversion following the touchdown, making it 23-8. This Green Bay drive consisted of more yardage than the entire first half of the game. This would be the last time the Green Bay offense would reach the end zone.

The 49ers put another touchdown up in the following drive when Garoppolo hit George Kittle for a 61-yard touchdown, padding the lead at 30-8.  Before the quarter was over, Bosa would sack Rodgers again, and the San Francisco defense would complete this drive with another sack on Rodgers.

Raheem Mostert took the ball up the middle for a 15-yard touchdown, adding seven more to the board, with just over five minutes to go.

Green Bay decided to put Tim Boyle in at quarterback for the last drive of the game but the Packers could not put up any more points.

Although the offense that put up 37 points in this game was extremely monumental in San Francisco’s win, the defense keeping Green Bay to just one score and sacking Rodgers five times was just as much of a contributing factor in this dominating win at home.
