The New England Revolution look set to sign Swedish-born Syrian defender Gabriel Somi from Östersunds FK in Sweden, according to multiple reports.
The news was first broke by a Swedish newspapers Expressen and Nerikes Allehanda, and was later confirmed by @MLSTransfers on twitter. The club is yet to confirm.
Somi is meeting the Revolution and a contract is in the works, according to @MLSTransfers. He is expected to officially sign with the club in the next few days.
Somi is a left sided defender and midfielder, who can play as either a left back or a left winger. He was born in Sweden, and has played for Swedish teams his entire career. He signed with his current club, Östersunds FK, in 2016 and scored three goals in 30 games with the team. He also is a member of the Syrian National team, but is yet to play a game for the side.
Adding Somi to the team would likely give competition to Chris Tierney on the left side of the defense. At 26-years-old, Somi would be a solid addition due to his age and European experience.
