The crown jewel and hometown boy who grew up a die-hard Maple Leafs fan has signed on the dotted line, officially ending #MarnerWatch. After a rather extended and emotionally draining contract dispute between the Toronto Maple Leafs and talented forward William Nylander, that ended on December 1, 2018, it was quite evident that Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas had no intention of letting the Mitch Marner contract situation drag on this time around. After both sides reached an agreement, much to the joy of Maple Leafs fans, let’s take a closer look at Mitch Marner’s new deal.

Team: Toronto Maple Leafs

Career Statistics: 241GP 67 Goals 157 Assists 224 Points +/1: +21

Contract: Term: 6 Years Average Annual Value: $10.893M Total: $65.358M

Instant Analysis: This is without question an excellent deal for Mitch Marner. Who’s $10.89M average annual salary makes him the 7th highest-paid player in the National Hockey League. Unfamiliar territory for a player who just got out of entry-level, and a very generous contract, to say the least. From Kyle Dubas’ perspective, his mantra of “We can, and we will” holds up for each of his four core pieces which are now all under contract long term: Auston Matthews, John Tavares, William Nylander, and now Mitch Marner.

Projected Stats in 2019/20:  25 goals 70 assists 95 points

Another season alongside centreman John Tavares is music to the ears for Maple Leafs fans from coast to coast. In addition this lethal partnership which worked so well last season, spells trouble for opposing defenses from around the National Hockey League. On top of that, Marner should see plenty of time on the Leafs # 1 power-play unit with the likes of Auston Matthews, Morgan Rielly, and William Nylander. Look for Mitch Marner to continue his torrent pace of consistently finding his name on the score sheet as one of the most talented and dynamic young forwards in the game.
