After the signing of his fellow defensive compatriot, Charlie McAvoy, it was only a matter of time before we saw Brandon Carlo’s name in the headlines for the Boston Bruins. After a summer of uncertainty, and the start of the 2019/20 NHL campaign just around the corner, it was evident that Bruins general manager Don Sweeney and his management group had some work to do and business to conduct. He did more than just “conduct”: business, and inked Carlo to a two-year bridge contract extension, worth a total of $5.7M. Here’s how both the Bruins as an organization and Carlo reached an agreement.

Team: Boston Bruins

Career Statistics: 230GP 8 Goals 24 Assists 32 Points +/-: +41

Contract: Term: two Years Average Annual Value: $2.85M Total: $5.7M

Instant Analysis: Another excellent deal for both the Boston Bruins and for defenseman Carlo, who’s quickly become a very important piece of the puzzle for the B’s. After inking fellow blue-liner, McAvoy, Sweeney has orchestrated an impressive defense core to go along with a talented group of forwards. This is no easy task, by any stretch of the imagination, especially in today’s NHL. Bruins fans should be licking their chops at the prospect of two of their “horses” on defense wrecking havoc over the next few seasons in Beantown. All in all, this is a really good piece of business from the Bruins management.

Although he often flies under the radar in Boston, those “in the know” around the Bruins and across the NHL landscape know of Carlo’s importance. What’s unique about Carlo is his ability to read the game, react quickly, and play with the poise and confidence of a veteran defenseman. These are all qualities of an excellent NHL blue-liner, and for someone like Carlo who’s still only 22 years of age, he is only going to get better. His offensive numbers should increase this year, as he continues to grow more and more comfortable in the Bruins top-four on the blue line. We’ll see what the 2019/20 NHL season has in store for the Bruins and Carlo in just under two weeks time.
