The Washington Football Team has endured a lot over the last year. From the firing of Jay Gruden to the team hiring Ron Rivera to the name change, and the variety of different accusations over the last year, things haven’t been the best. Yet again, Washington is in the spotlight following the release of Dwayne Haskins on Monday.
Haskins was the third quarterback selected in the 2019 draft, following Kyler Murray and Daniel Jones. He was the potential new franchise signal-caller following Alex Smith‘s potentially career-ending injury. Instead, he has been benched multiple times within his first two seasons.
2019 Season
In seven games as a starter during his rookie season, Haskins went 2-5. He had a completion percentage of under 59 percent and an even touchdown to interception ratio. With a new coaching staff, Haskins was potentially on the hot seat. Ron Rivera brought in Kyle Allen via trade, and Smith was on the road to returning from his grueling injury.
2020 Season
Haskins started the first four games of the season and left much to be desired before Rivera turned to Allen. Following that decision, Haskins was reverted to the third-string quarterback, even behind Smith. When Allen went down with an injury against the Los Angeles Rams, Smith entered the game, not Haskins. Following Smith’s injury later on this season, Haskins had yet another opportunity to prove his worth to the franchise. He started against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 15, throwing a touchdown against two interceptions in a close 20-15 loss.
Then, following the loss, and in a week where Haskins needed to be at his best, he was found breaking the league’s COVID guidelines and was seen at a strip club without a mask. Yet because of Allen and Smith’s injuries, Haskins was still the starter, but not without a price in Week 16’s game against Carolina. He was revoked as the team’s captain. In a win-and-in game for Washington against the Panthers, Haskins completed just 50 percent of his passes and had two interceptions. He looked lost on the field and was ultimately benched for Taylor Heinicke as Washington fell 20-13.
What’s Next?
Just a day after he was the starter, he is now looking for a new home. For Washington, they are now in a win-and-in situation against Philadelphia on Sunday night, yet don’t know who their quarterback is between Smith and Heinicke. They are fighting for a playoff spot, yet are looking for a franchise quarterback. Haskins, meanwhile, will have to prove he’s worthy enough to be added to a practice squad by a team after the last few weeks, or else he’ll be labeled as what he seems to already be, which is a bust.
