Report: Red Sox to Start Smith in Series Opener

The Boston Red Sox have announced that 31-year-old right-hander Josh Smith will toe the slab at Camden Yards on Monday.

Smith has made one appearance in 2019, working one scoreless inning against the White Sox on Friday night. Prior to that outing, the Florida native last pitched in the majors back in 2017 with the Oakland Athletics –– where he posted a 4.89 ERA in 26 relief appearances.

The right-hander has been solid in Triple-A Pawtucket this season, going 1-1 with a 3.78 ERA through three starts. While not eye-popping, it was enough to beat out 2013 32nd-round pick Mike Shawaryn –– who has a 2.72 ERA in six starts for the PawSox.

Smith’s first MLB start since 2016 will be against Orioles starter David Hess, who is 1-4 with a 5.34 ERA on the season.
