Report: Pittsburgh Steelers Acquire Avery Williamson from New York Jets

Avery Williamson

The Pittsburgh Steelers won’t let their unblemished record make them become complacent, it appears. They are acquiring linebacker Avery Williamson from the New York Jets. Ian Rapoport reports the deal involves a swap of late-round draft picks.

The move makes sense for both sides. Though they are 7-0 this year, the Steelers do have a need at linebacker. Ben Roethlisberger is only getting older. Making aggressive moves to make sure they’re in contention at the tail end of his career is the right thing to do.

The Jets, meanwhile, are not worried about the now. Williamson is 28 years old, and the team is years away from being anything serious. Any compensation would make sense for them in return for a player like Williamson. In no way is that a knock on him, more an acknowledgment of how far the Jets are from anything relevant.

Williamson has 50 tackled on the season in six games. Last year, his first with the Jets, he had 120 tackles. The Steelers are allowing 129.7 rushing yards per game at this point. That’s concerning, especially considering who they need to get through in the AFC.
