After almost a week of suspense, special teams ace Matthew Slater re-signed with the New England Patriots.
While the exact details of his contract are unknown at the time, ESPN’s Mike Reiss has reported the deal will keep Slater around for another two seasons. The seven-time Pro-Bowler was paid $1.4 million last season and has made just over $14 million in his 10-year career.
Following reports that Slater was visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend, there was some buzz among fans and the media that he would be playing elsewhere in 2018. However, he left Pittsburgh Friday without a contract, sparking some hope among fans that a return to New England was still in play.
Slater is fresh off of his fifth All-Pro season and has 134 career tackles to go along with one forced fumble. He is seen as the premier special teams specialist in the NFL and has been voted to be the Patriots’ special teams captain for the past seven seasons.
The UCLA product will now be under contract through 2020 when he will be 34-years-old.
