Report: Panthers’ Christian McCaffrey Will Miss 4 to 6 Weeks

12:18 a.m. update: According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Christian McCaffrey has a high-ankle sprain and will miss four to six weeks of action.

Carolina Panthers fans woke up to some bad news on Monday morning. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, star running back Christian McCaffrey is expected to miss “multiple weeks” with the ankle injury he suffered during Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A 2019 Pro Bowler who has over 5,600 career scrimmage yards, McCaffrey was the league’s best running back prior to going down. Joining him in the medical examination room is fellow star running back Saquon Barkley, who reportedly tore his ACL and is done for the year.

McCaffrey finished Sunday’s game with 59 rushing yards and 29 receiving yards. Outside of McCaffrey, only three players tallied rushes: wide receiver Curtis Samuel (four carries for 29 yards), safety Jeremy Chinn (one carry for one yard on direct snap), and running back Mike Davis (one carry for one yard). Davis added eight catches for 74 yards before the final whistle blew.

Going forward, the Panthers travel to Los Angeles for a Week 3 game against the Chargers before returning home in Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals. Perhaps a fair target date for McCaffrey’s return is Sunday, Oct. 11, when the Panthers and Falcons meet for a Week 5 clash in Atlanta.

Beyond Davis, the only other running back on the Panthers’ roster is Trenton Cannon. However, fullback Alex Armah could see more carries as a result of McCaffrey’s injury. It’s also possible that the Panthers peruse the free agent market, though they likely won’t break the bank for a player like Devonta Freeman since McCaffrey is expected to return in a few weeks.
