It has been a busy day for the Washington Nationals. After reportedly sending Max Scherzer and Trea Turner to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kyle Schwarber to the Boston Red Sox, they have another deal in place.

Washington has traded reliever Daniel Hudson to the San Diego Padres, according to Robert Murray of FanSided.

Right-hander Mason Thompson and shortstop Jordan Barley are heading back to Washington. Dennis Lin of The Athletic and Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post provided details on the return.

Hudson has had a fantastic bounce-back performance after a rough season in 2020. This year, he has a 2.20 ERA with 48 strikeouts over 32.2 innings pitched. He will hit the free agent market this coming winter after he finishes out a two-year, $11 million deal.

The Return

Thompson ranks as the ninth-best prospect in the Padres’ system, according to MLB Pipeline. He haas a 5.74 ERA with 24 strikeouts over 26.2 innings pitched at Triple-A this year. He does have a little bit of MLB experience this season with a 3.00 ERA over three innings pitched.

Meanwhile, Barley is a 21-year-old shortstop slashing .240/.333/.388 with eight homers, 28 RBI, 31 walks, and 82 strikeouts this season. Most impressive are his 33 stolen bases over 61 games, which truly indicate just how much value he possesses when running the bases.

For the Padres, they end up getting a Nationals pitcher after all despite their deal to land Scherzer falling through. Hudson will be a great addition to the back end of their bullpen. As for the Nationals, they get another good prospect in Thompson, who could come up at some point during the rest of this season, as well as Barley.

With so many deals happening on Thursday night, it is evident that Friday’s deadline will be must-see for the baseball world.
