The NFL’s final week is upon us and ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen kicked off NFL Sunday Countdown with a juicy rumor. According to the duo insiders, the New York Giants are “likely” to fire head coach Pat Shurmur but retain general manager Dave Gettleman.
ESPN’s Chris Mortenson is also reporting that the Giants will “likely” keep Dave Gettleman despite “likely” firing Pat Shurmur.
This is the absolute worst case scenario.

Shurmur, 54, joined the Giants ahead of the 2018 season, replacing Ben McAdoo. In his first season with the Giants, Shurmur went 5-11 and won two of five challenges. This season, Shurmur is 4-11 and 0-for-7 on challenges.
Gettleman, 68, joined the Giants months before Shurmur as the team’s general manager just one season removed from being fired from an identical role with the Carolina Panthers.
Gettleman’s has been subject to loads of criticsm, as many top executives are. Gettleman let safety Landon Collins sign with the rival Washington Redskins during free agency and traded receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. and Pro Bowl pass-rusher Olivier Vernon to the Cleveland Browns for Jabrill Peppers, Kevin Zeitler, a first-round pick, and a third-round pick. In the draft, Gettleman passed on the sure favorite in Dwayne Haskins to take Daniel Jones at No. 6. Haskins fell to the Redskins in the middle of the first round.
Perhaps a win in a spoiler game against the Philadelphia Eagles could change the Giants’ brass’ mind, but even then, a 10-22 record over two seasons with weapons such as Beckham, Saquon Barkley, and Eli Manning is nothing to be pleased with.
