Report: Mookie Betts Turned Down Massive Contract Offer from Red Sox

A report has surfaced that the Boston Red Sox offered a substantial amount of money to outfielder Mookie Betts during the 2019 offseason, which the superstar declined.

WEEI’s Lou Meroni reports that Boston offered Betts $300 million over 10 years to stay in a Red Sox uniform. Meroni claims that Betts countered the offer, asking for $420 million over 12 years.

Speculation over whether or not the Red Sox will extend or trade Mookie Betts has ruled headlines in Boston this offseason. After leaks of a hefty contract offer between Betts and the Red Sox, that speculation is only growing stronger. With varying reports throughout the entire offseason on if the Red Sox are willing to trade Betts, the asking price to extend the star outfielder is almost identical to Mike Trout’s record-breaking contract extension. In March of 2020, the Los Angeles Angels and Trout, arguably the best player in baseball, agreed to a 12-year, $430 million dollar deal.

As the Red Sox look to cut payroll, it’s looking more and more likely that the club will not offer Betts a contract that gives him roughly $30 million per year. It’s becoming clear that the time to trade Betts is now. Although it is a tough pill to swallow for Red Sox fans, the truth is tough. With multiple teams involved in trade talks with Boston, Betts’s value is undoubtedly at its highest right now.

Unlike the trade deadline or after the season when Betts becomes a free agent, if the Red Sox want the most bang for their buck, the club must trade their star outfielder before the 2020 season.
