The New York Mets have been one of the oddest teams in baseball this season. After a change in ownership prior to the offseason, their mantra changed quite a bit; they planned to spend and trade aggressively. They did so this offseason with the Francisco Lindor trade. Now at the trade deadline, they are atop the NL East without Lindor or teammate Jacob deGrom who are both injured. They are two of some 25 total players who have gotten hurt this season and despite that, the Mets have been atop their division for two months.

The Mets now are in a position to make a few blockbuster trades to bolster their rotation and lineup. Per Jeff Passan ESPN, the Mets are moving close to a deal that would add two-time All-Star Javier Baez from the Chicago Cubs. The deal also includes Trevor Williams a right-handed pitcher.

Baez, 28, is a pending free agent and recently expressed that he would have interest in playing alongside Lindor whom he was teammates with for the 2017 World Baseball Classic on Team Puerto Rico.

The two-time All-Star has had a sub-par season with a .245/.289/.483 slash line and a .773 OPS. His OPS+ is 107 and Baez has also hit 22 home runs and knocked in 65 along with 13 stolen bases. He has also won a Gold-Glove and a Silver Slugger award over his eight seasons in Chicago. He helped bring them their first title in over 108 years and won the NLCS MVP in the process.

Meanwhile, Williams, 29, has been not as good as advertised for Chicago this season with a 5.06 ERA in 58.2 innings with 61 strikeouts and a 1.53 WHIP.

Heading back to the Cubs is outfield prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong. The 2020 first-round pick is just 19 years old. He went 10-for-24 through six games at Single-A before going down with a shoulder injury. He should have an immediate impact upon his recovery and could make a quick rise through the Cubs’ minor league system.
