Report: Lakers Could Target Heat’s Goran Dragic if They Miss out on Top Free Agents

Jacari McRae | June 30th, 2019

According to the 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s John Gambadorothe Los Angeles Lakers could target Miami Heat point guard Goran Dragic should they miss out on Kawhi Leonard or D’Angelo Russell.

Dragic recently picked up his $19.2 million contract for the 2019-20 NBA season, which will be the final year of his five-year, $85 million deal with the Heat. Because he opted in, Dragic is now trade eligible. Should the Lakers pursue him, it likely won’t cost them much considering they can absorb his salary into their $32 million cap space. If Dragic is traded, it would likely put the Heat under the luxury tax for next season.

However, there’s still a slim chance this trade happens. With rumors of both Kawhi Leonard and D’Angelo Russell strongly considering the Lakers, there’s a chance they could get at least one of them. Despite the slim chances of Dragic landing there, this latest rumor does show that there’s a market for Dragic.

Dragic has played five seasons with the Heat after he was traded from the Phoenix Suns back in 2015. He only played in 36 games last season due to knee surgery and averaged just 13.7 points, his lowest since the 2011-12 NBA season.
