Following an 0-4 start, changes had to be made for the Houston Texans. On Monday afternoon, the decision was to fire de facto general manager and head coach, Bill O’Brien.
O’Brien had just taken control of the offensive playcalling before Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. Ultimately, Jack Easterby and Cal McNair decided that his blunders during the offseason were enough and opted to let O’Brien go. During his six full seasons and four games this year, he compiled a record of 52-48.
In June of 2019, Houston fired then general manager Brian Gaine. From then on, O’Brien took over as the general manager and made some curious moves, including giving two first-round picks to the Dolphins for Laremy Tunsil. Of course, the most notable move of his tenure as general manager was shipping off DeAndre Hopkins for a minimal return.
With O’Brien now gone, the interim job belongs to defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel. Crennel spent six seasons as head coach for the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs before heading to Houston. He takes over a struggling team devoid of a solid culture thanks to O’Brien and will look to right the ship, which begins with a game against the division-rival Jaguars on Sunday.
At this point, the Texans are in a spot where they have to build around Deshaun Watson, and it might involve blowing everything up. Houston has a few key players with Watson, Tunsil, Zach Cunningham, and Justin Reid they can build around. Without first or second-round picks this year, that could be easier said than done.
The fact that this move was done this early is surprising but needed to be done. A fresh start was needed in Houston, and there are plenty of other options that could do much better than O’Brien. Texans fans, you got your wish.
