Report: Dalvin Cook Could be Latest Running Back to Hold Out

Shortly after the news out of Minnesota broke that defensive lineman Everson Griffen is opting out of his contract with the Vikings, another good possibility came to light.

Star running back Dalvin Cook is looking for a contract extension this offseason and could hold out if he doesn’t receive one according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Although it’s become the norm in recent seasons, it doesn’t always benefit the player or the team when all is said and done.

Last season, Chargers running back Melvin Gordon held out. By the time he and the team agreed to terms, the season was well underway. When Gordon finally joined his team, he seemed to instantly derail the offense.

While the coaches were working him back into the lineup, the rest of the offense suffered as a result. Austin Ekeler had been carrying the load with much success in Gordon’s absence. His production came to a near-halt as Gordon got more involved.

Two seasons ago Le’Veon Bell held out. After season-long rumors that he would report to Pittsburgh this week or that week. He ended up sitting out the whole season. After signing with the Jets, last season, he seemed less effective than he was in Pittsburgh.

Cook may want to rethink this idea. Even though he’s one of the best running backs on the field when healthy, he does have the tendency to get hurt.

In an offseason that appears is going to be a tough one in Minnesota decision wise, as they have very little cap space, so the Cook situation will be one to keep a close eye on as well.
