Report: Celtics and Jaylen Brown Agree to Extension

With the start of the NBA regular season on the horizon, the Boston Celtics made headlines this afternoon.

The team and forward Jaylen Brown agreed to a four-year extension worth $115 million that will keep Brown in Boston through the 2023-2024 season.

Brown appeared in 74 games last season and averaged 13 points and 4.2 rebounds a game.

The former seventh overall pick will be looking to lead a Celtics team that just underwent an offseason full of change.

The extension also signifies management trust in this young core that includes Jayson Tatum and the added Kemba Walker via free agency.

The contract comes as somewhat of a surprise as Danny Ainge has historically taken a conservative approach when it comes to rookie extensions. Brown, however, appears to be the exception even though he only averaged 13.9 points a game in last year’s playoff run after averaging 18 the season before.

Additionally, the deal represents somewhat of a risk as Brown will make an average of 28.75 million a year throughout the extension. The Celtics, however, are hoping Brown can turn into an elite player as they look to put last year’s disappointing season in the rearview mirror.
