Carlos Beltran enjoyed being the Mets’ manager for two months before he found himself at the center of arguably the biggest cheating scandal in baseball history.
Beltran stepped down as manager of the New York Mets on Thursday. His time as manager lasted just 77 days and ended before spring training started.
A nine-page report from Major League Baseball’s commissioner, Robert Manfred, cited Beltran as one of the Astros players involved in the 2017 sign-stealing scandal.
Beltran’s announcement comes after Astros owner Jim Crane fired general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch on Monday and the Red Sox followed suit and parted ways with manager Alex Cora on Tuesday. All three were named in the commissioner’s report as accountable for the scheme. The league decided it would not punish Astros players for the illegal sign stealing. It initially seemed like Beltran would receive no punishment.
Instead, Beltran became the only name from the commissioner’s report that still held a position on a coaching staff.
While many fans were skeptical of his hire to begin with, they were willing to give him a chance, but he didn’t even make it to spring training. The Mets are another team left reeling from this scandal.
