The Atlanta Braves made a pair of trades to bolster their outfield on Friday afternoon. First, they acquired outfielder Adam Duvall from the Miami Marlins in exchange for minor league catcher Alex Jackson. Then, Atlanta struck a deal to acquire Eddie Rosario from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for veteran infielder Pablo Sandoval. The Braves also received cash as part of the Rosario deal.

Braves-Marlins Deal
Duvall, 32, is no stranger to the Braves, for whom he played from 2018 through 2020. Atlanta acquired him from the Reds in 2018 and kept him in tow for two-and-a-half seasons before he hit free agency and signed with the Marlins this past offseason. Through 91 games in 2021, he is slashing .229/.277/.478 with 22 homers, 68 RBI, a 6.2 percent walk rate, and 31 percent strikeout rate. He’s a good fit for the Braves considering his familiarity with the team. Further, Atlanta pries him away from a division rival, which is important because he has hit five homers against the Braves alone this year. Under contract through the end of the year, he’ll provide the Braves with extra outfield help after losing Marcell Ozuna and Ronald Acuña Jr.
Heading back to Miami is Jackson, a 25-year-old catcher. A first-round pick of the Mariners in 2014, Jackson was traded to the Braves in 2016. He’s spent 19 games in the majors, going 3-for-43 with three walks and 22 strikeouts. The California native has fared better in Triple-A, where he is slashing .287/.366/.694 with 11 homers, 36 RBI, 11 walks, and 35 strikeouts through 30 games this year.

Braves-Indians Deal
In addition to Duvall, the Braves are adding Rosario to help soften the blow of losing Acuña and Ozuna. Through 78 games this year, the 29-year-old is slashing .254/.296/.389 with seven homers, 29 RBI, a 5.6 percent walk rate, and 15.4 percent strikeout rate. He’s posted a career-low 0.3 fWAR this year. The former Twins fourth-round pick is currently injured and taking in $8 million this year, so trading him away helps reduce some of the financial strain on Cleveland.
Heading back to the Indians is veteran infielder Pablo Sandoval. The 34-year-old has put together a .172/.302/.342 slash line with a 12.8 percent walk rate and 29.1 percent strikeout rate. While he’s evidently reached base at a solid clip, he’s also striking out too much. The former Giants star third baseman has posted -0.1 fWAR this season and has primarily been a pinch-hit option off the bench.
