Josh Allen can breathe.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Buffalo Bills are signing left tackle Dion Dawkins to a four-year, $60 million extension just one day after extending head coach Sean McDermott’s contract for six more years.
The deal will keep the former second-round pick in Buffalo and protect Allen’s blindside through the 2024 season.
Both parties were in discussion regarding a contract extension earlier this spring, according to Bills general manager Brandon Beane, so it is no surprise that they were able to get a deal done before the regular season started. Teams are ramping up their workout plans and on-field activities, which increases the chances of injuries.
Since being drafted in 2017, the 26-year-old offensive lineman has played in all 48 games, starting 43 during his three seasons with the Bills. He is coming off a monster 2019 season in which he started all 16 games and allowed only 3.5 sacks in 95 percent of team snaps.
Dawkins was set to make a base salary of $985,441 in the final year of his rookie contract before becoming a free agent in 2021.
