The Cincinnati Bengals will re-sign tight end C.J. Uzomah to a three-year $18 million deal.
The Cincinnati Bengals will re-sign tight end C.J. Uzomah, per Ian Rapoport.
Uzomah, the fourth-year product out of Auburn, finished last season with 43 receptions, 439 yards, and three touchdowns, which were all career highs.
The signing is the first piece to fall in place in the Cincinnati tight end room, as both Tyler Eifert and Tyler Kroft are set to become free agents on Wednesday.
Uzomah began last season behind Eifert and Kroft on the depth chart, but with injuries cutting their seasons short, Uzomah was able to make an impact on offense.
The Bengals can still bring Eifert and Kroft back on new contracts, but with injury concerns with the pair, Uzomah is still expected to take over a larger role in the Cincinatti offense in 2019.
New head coach Zac Taylor comes from a system in Los Angeles that utilized their tight ends often, as Gerald Evertt and Tyler Higbee combined for 57 recpetions, 612 yards, and five touchdowns.
The $18 million deal will put some added pressure on the still young tight end for the Bengals, as he will need to produce as a reliable blocker and pass catcher next season.
