Report: Bashaud Breeland Facing 4-Game Suspension

The Kansas City Chiefs will likely open the season without cornerback Bashaud Breeland. The 28-year-old defensive back is facing a potential four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Breeland was already facing a four-game suspension for a separate violation of the substance abuse policy, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. In April, he was arrested and charged with resisting arrest, transporting alcohol with a broken seal in a motor vehicle, having an open container of beer or wine in a motor vehicle, marijuana possession, and driving without a license.

“We’re just going to let the law enforcement part of it take its course. Let’s see exactly what went on,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said in May. “I know there is video out there. I’ve seen the video. I’ve talked to the kid. Let’s find out what the pace of this was and what caused everything to take place. I’m curious to see that part, as we all are, and then we’ll evaluate it from there.”

Breeland signed with the Chiefs last year, intercepting two passes in 15 regular-season games. He also added another interception in the Super Bowl and was rewarded for his services by receiving another one-year deal from Kansas City this offseason.

The Chiefs will be hurting defensively without Breeland because they don’t have a lot of depth at cornerback. Rashad Fenton, Antonio Hamilton, and L’Jarius Sneed could see some playing time while Breeland is out.
