The Boston Red Sox announced on Thursday that they have acquired outfielder/first baseman Steve Pearce from the Toronto Blue Jays for minor league infielder Santiago Espinal.

Pearce has been in the Majors for 12 seasons and has played for six different teams throughout his career. Throughout his 26 games with the Blue Jays this season Pearce is hitting .291/.349/.519 with four home runs and 16 RBIs. He will most likely be put in the lineup against southpaws, as he is hitting .306/.358/.531 against lefties this season.

Pearce has spent most of his career in the outfield, but has made 189 starts at first base. Pearce is a decent fielder, with a .994 fielding percentage at first base and a .986 fielding percentage in the outfield.

Espinal was drafted by the Red Sox in the 10th round of the 2016 MLB June Amateur Draft. Espinal is currently a second baseman and shortstop in High A-Ball and batting .314/.364/.478 with seven home runs throughout 64 games with the Salem Red Sox.

It is currently unknown when Pearce will make his debut with the Red Sox or if he will be used as an outfielder, first baseman, or both.
