Manchester United has officially confirmed their deal with Real Madrid that completes the transfer of defender Raphaël Varane.
Varane is now expected to undergo medical tests and his official unveiling should take place next week. Varane is Manchester United’s second-biggest signing this summer after Jadon Sancho‘s transfer from Borussia Dortmund was completed last week.
The 28-year-old French defender spent the last 10 years with Real Madrid. He played a huge part in helping Los Blancos win the UEFA Champions League four times along with three La Liga titles. In addition, Varane helped France win its second World Cup in 2018. Varane has many accomplishments under his belt and is ready for the next challenge.

Real Madrid has been going through some hard times since their last Champions League triumph in 2018. At times, Varane has had some struggles of his own on the pitch. Furthermore, France had a horrible run at Euro 2020 despite Varane’s best efforts in leading a defense that performed poorly. In Varane’s case, he’s long overdue for a much-needed fresh start and now he finally has it.
The Red Devils have not won the English Premier League title since 2013. Furthermore, the club hasn’t won a major title since 2017. Over the years, the club has made some big signings but things haven’t really worked out for the best. Manchester United is eager to end the long drought of struggles and disappointment. Bringing in the services of Varane and Sancho certainly bulks up their strength.
The signing of Bruno Fernandes is doing the club well, so adding Sancho to the attack gives the Red Devils great potential. Man U has had problems with their defense and the addition of Varane is key to helping solve the problem. Varane’s leadership may be a difference-maker.
The Red Devils open their Premier League campaign on Aug. 14, 2021, against Leeds United.
