Patrick Beverley was born in Chicago, Illinois. Beverley attended John Marshall Metropolitan High School, in Chicago. In his senior year, Patrick Beverley averaged 37.3 points, leading the state in scoring, and was named Co-Player of the Year.
In 2006, Beverley attended the University of Arkansas, he averaged 13.9 points, on 42.7% shooting, 4.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. In 2007, he averaged 12.1 points, on 41.2% shooting, 6.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. During the start of his junior year, Beverley was deemed ineligible to play for Arkansas due to another student has written a paper for him.
In October of 2008, Beverley signed a one-year, about $100k deal with a Ukrainian team, called Dnipro. In 46 games played, Beverley averaged he averaged 16.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. He participated in the UBL All-Star Game and won the Slam Dunk Contest as well.
After playing a year in Ukraine, Beverley was automatically entered in the NBA draft in 2009. He was drafted 42nd overall by the Los Angeles Lakers. A day later, the Miami Heat acquired the draft rights to Beverley from the Lakers in exchange for a 2011 second round draft pick and cash considerations.
On August 2009, he signed with Olympiacos Piraeus in Greece. He helped the team win the 2010 Greek Cup. In 19 games, he averaged 2.7 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. In 22 Greek League games, he averaged 4.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.
In July of 2010, Beverley played in the NBA Summer League for the Miami Heat. He averaged 5.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game during the Summer League. In August of 2010, the Heat signed Beverley. In October of 2010, Beverley was waived by the Heat. He was featured in six preseason games with Miami, averaging 6.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1 steal per game.
In January of 2011, Beverley signed with Spartak St. Petersburg. He signed a contract with a Spartak through 2014. In 2012, Beverley won the EuroCup MVP. In December of 2012, Beverley reached an agreement with the Houston Rockets. In January of 2013, Beverley signed a two-year contract with the Rockets. In Beverley’s first season, he averaged 5.6 points, on 41.8% shooting, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.
In the 2013-2014 season, Beverley played 56 games, and started in 55 of the 56 games, averaging, 10.2 points, on 41.4% shooting, 3.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. In the playoffs, Beverley averaged 11.8 points, on 43.1% shooting, 5.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. Houston lost in the first round to the Thunder in six games.
In the 2014-2015 season, Beverley’s season ended early due to a left wrist injury. He ended the season off playing 56 games and starting in 55 of the 56 games, again. He averaged 10.1 points, on 38.3% shooting, 4.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.1 steals.
In the 2015-2016 season, Beverly re-signed with the Rockets, signing a four-year, $23M deal. That season, he went on to average 9.9 points on 43.4% shooting, 3.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.3 steals. During the playoffs, Beverley saw just 26 minutes of play, averaging 5.8 points, on 27% shooting, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.
In the 2016-2017 season, prior to the season starting, Beverley was ruled out for three weeks due to arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. He made his debut mid-November, averaging 9.5 points, on 42% shooting, 5.9 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. During the playoffs, Beverley averaged 11.1 points, on 41.3% shooting, 5.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.
Prior to the 2017-2018 season, Beverley, along with Lou Williams, Montrezl Harrell, Sam Dekker, Darrun Hilliard, DeAndre Liggins, Kyle Wiltjer, and a 2018 first-round pick were traded to the Los Angeles Clippers for Chris Paul. Beverley averaged 12.2 points, on 40.3% shooting, 4.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.7 steals. Beverley averaged a career high in points and steals in his first season with the Clippers.
In the 2018-2019 season, Beverley had settled in with the Clippers, and although his scoring average saw a dip, he had a significant impact on the defensive end, guarding the opposing teams best player, night in and night out. Beverley averaged 7.6 points, on 40.7% shooting, 5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 0.9 steals per game.
As you can see, Beverley has gone through a long journey to get to where he is today. He never gave up and worked hard when he was playing overseas in order to become a starting point guard in the NBA. Some people may look at Beverley’s stats and say he’s not good or that a starting point guard should do better. But, stats don’t show his defensive skill-set.
Patrick Beverley is the type of player that if he is on your team, you love him. If he is on the opposing team, you hate him. He is a pest on the defensive end and doesn’t give up. He talks and talks until the opponent is fed up and gets a technical. We have seen that in playoffs this season against Kevin Durant and the Warriors. Beverley will not back down from anyone, guarding Russell Westbrook, Steph Curry, LeBron James, and now even Kevin Durant. If I were to pick my franchise point guard, it would be Patrick Beverley without a doubt.
