Philadephia Eagles vs. Dallas Cowboys: Recap and Highlights

The Philadelphia Eagles faced the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019, in Week 7 of the 2019 NFL season. Here are some of the highlights from the game.

The Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys faced off in divisional play on Sunday night, as both teams entered Sunday’s game with a 3-3 record. Dallas leads the all-time series between the two teams and has won the last three meetings, but came into Week 7 losing their last three games in a row.

The Cowboys ended their losing streak by defeating the Eagles, 37-10.

The game started with Philadelphia receiving the ball. On the fifth play of the game, Carson Wentz connected with Dallas Goedert, who fumbled the ball and gave Maliek Collins the opportunity to recover and end the opening drive. The Cowboys’ opening drive was all Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott before Tavon Austin took the ball to the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown. Philadelphia’s second drive also ended with a fumbled ball after Wentz was sacked by Demarcus Lawrence and Antwaun Woods recovered it at the Philadelphia 14-yard line. The Cowboys came back in their second drive to put seven more points on the board, taking a 14-0 lead with just under nine minutes on the clock.  The Eagles put their first points of the game on the scoreboard in their next possession after Wentz threw a deep 28-yard pass to Goedert for a touchdown, closing the lead by seven. Dallas was unable to convert their next possession into any points and the Eagles went three and out and closed out the first quarter on their next possession.

Dallas scored the first touchdown of the second quarter following 12 plays and nearly seven minutes. Again, Dallas had another touchdown nullified when an offensive holding penalty was called on the team, but four plays later, Prescott found Blake Jarwin for a one-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 21-7 with 6:40 left in the half. In the Eagles’ next drive, Wentz was sacked by Jaylon Smith for a loss of eight yards on third down, turning the ball over to Dallas once again. The first third-down conversion of the Cowboys’ next drive was an automatic first down following an illegal use of hands penalty on Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins. Before the two-minute warning timeout, Prescott connected with Cooper for a 44-yard gain, but the Cowboys would end the possession with a 36-yard field goal kick by kicker Brett Maher to make it 24-7 with a minute and a half remaining. In their last chance to produce any points in the first half, the Eagles went three-and-out and Dallas had one more chance to put points on the board. They did, as Maher kicked an incredible 63-yard field goal to give the Cowboys a 20-point lead going into halftime. The 63-yard kick is the second-longest in NFL history and the longest kick in Cowboys history, and was the second time in as many weeks Maher kicked a field goal from beyond 60 yards.

The Cowboys received the ball first in the third quarter, and for the first time this year, Prescott was sacked and he fumbled the ball. However, Ezekiel Elliott recovered it, saving Dallas from a turnover. Dallas would be given another shot due to a penalty call for an illegal block above the waist, but Prescott was sacked yet again, this time by Hassan Ridgeway. Philadelphia’s opening drive lasted a lengthy 12 plays and nearly six minutes. On the drive, Wentz connected with Alshon Jeffrey twice, once for a deep 30-yard pass, and with Nelson Agholor and Jordan Howard before he threw his first incomplete pass eight plays into the drive. Four plays later, Jake Elliott kicked a 38-yard field goal to put three more points on the board, making it 27-10 with just over five minutes left in the quarter. Dallas answered on their next possession with another field goal, ending the quarter with the 27-10 lead.

The fourth quarter started with Dallas having possession of the ball on the Philadelphia 44-yard line; four plays later, Maher kicked another field goal to put three more points on the board for the Cowboys, this time from 29 yards out. The scoreboard read 30-10 with 12:40 left to go, and once again, the Eagles’ opening drive ended with an intercepted pass as Xavier Woods got the interception. The Cowboys’ second possession also ended in a turnover when Jalen Mills picked a pass intended for Tavon Austin, and yet one more time the Eagles turned over the ball in the next possession when Wentz fumbled on the second play of the drive and Kerry Hyder recovered the ball. Dallas then answered with a touchdown after starting at the Philadelphia 16-yard line and Prescott scrambled right on the third down for the touchdown, extending the lead to 37-10 with 10 minutes left to play in the game. This would turn out to be the last scoring drive of the game as neither team put any more points on the scoreboard in the next three possessions and Dallas won a “must-win” game to break their losing streak.

The Cowboys are on a bye week next week and will face the New York Giants when they return on Nov. 4. The Eagles will travel to Buffalo next week to face the Bills.
