Philadelphia Eagles vs. Buffalo Bills: Week 8 Preview

As the midpoint of the season approaches, the Philadelphia Eagles (3-4) and Buffalo Bills (5-1) find themselves going in two very different directions.

The Eagles have lost two in a row, being blown out in both games. The Eagles are now 3-4 on the season and are in real danger of missing the playoffs. Meanwhile, Buffalo is off to its best start in over a decade, coming into this home match-up against the Eagles.

The two teams have met previously on 13 different occasions. Philadelphia leads the series, 7-6.

The Eagles seem to have a multitude of injuries on a daily basis as of late. This weekend, the Eagles will likely be without DeSean Jackson, Avonte Maddox, Nigel Bradham, Jason Peters, and Timmy Jernigan. Jackson has not played since Week 1, a game where he led the team in receiving yards and touchdowns. The Eagles’ offense is sorely lacking a consistent deep threat without Jackson.

Buffalo, on the other hand, is beginning to build consistency in an effort to contend with the New England Patriots in the AFC East. Quarterback Josh Allen continues to develop as a passer. Allen’s numbers are by no means spectacular (1,324 yards, seven touchdowns, and seven interceptions), but the second-year quarterback has found a way to win games this season. Running back Frank Gore will look to take the pressure off of Allen. Gore has carried the ball at least 10 times in each game this season, finding the end zone twice.

This game will come down to whether or not Philadelphia can stop the Buffalo passing attack. The injuries suffered by the Eagles’ defense has made it very difficult for the Philadelphia to defend consistently in recent weeks. The Eagles have surrendered over 400 yards of offense in back to back losses to Minnesota and Dallas. If defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz cannot come up with a scheme to get off the field, it will be a long day for the Eagles. Philadelphia’s defense is currently ranked 18th in yards per game.

For Buffalo, the Bills will rely on their defense to carry the team. Buffalo has only allowed more than 20 points once this season. The Bills also rank third in the league in total defense (yards per game). Look for Buffalo to take away the run and force Carson Wentz to throw the ball to a depleted receiving corps.

Prediction

The Eagles have many things going wrong at once. Many outlets have reported locker room drama, and the injuries keep piling up. Carson Wentz has also not been able to develop his usual chemistry with receivers this season and the running game has been  inconsistent. Meanwhile, Buffalo seems to be getting better every week. Pair that with the raucous crowd at New Era Field, and Philly could be in for a long day.
