Petree’s 2024-25 NBA MVP Power Rankings: Week 4

NBA MVP Power Rankings Week 4 - Nuggets Nikola Jokic

The 2024-25 NBA season is in full swing the MVP race has already begun.

Here are the 2024-25 NBA MVP Power Rankings for Week 4:

5. Kevin Durant

Previously: Unranked
Phoenix Suns: 8-2

The Phoenix Suns are 8-2 and currently rank second in the Western Conference. Much of the Suns’ success can be attributed to their leader, Kevin Durant, who has played some of the most efficient basketball of his career. Durant is averaging 27.6 points while shooting 55.3 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three.

Unfortunately, Durant suffered a calf strain last Friday in a game against the Dallas Mavericks. He is expected to miss the next two weeks.

4. Anthony Davis

Los Angeles Lakers: 6-4

After starting the season 3-0, the Lakers are 3-4 in their last seven games. Still, Anthony Davis is averaging the second most points per game in the NBA, only trailing Giannis Antetokounmpo by 0.4 points. Meanwhile, he continues to play stellar defense.

The Lakers are currently on a two-game winning streak, positioning themselves with an opportunity to carry their momentum into the NBA Cup. If the Lakers can replicate their success in last season’s tournament, then Davis will surely rise in these rankings.

3. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Previously: 2
Oklahoma City Thunder: 9-1

Last Saturday, the Oklahoma City Thunder lost their star big man, Chet Holmgren, during their game against the Golden State Warriors. Unfortunately, Holmgren will be unavailable for eight to 10 weeks. After that, the Thunder are expected to re-evaluate his condition.

The Thunder proceeded to fall to the Warriors, suffering their second loss of the season. However, Gilgeous-Alexander responded one night later with an emphatic performance, scoring 45 points against the Los Angeles Clippers. If the Thunder plan on maintaining their spot atop the Western Conference, they’ll need more herculean efforts from Gilgeous-Alexander.

2. Jayson Tatum

Previously: 1
Boston Celtics: 9-2

Jayson Tatum is currently averaging the most points and assists of his career while seamlessly defending both forwards and centers. To Tatum’s credit, the Boston Celtics are tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the second-best record in the NBA.

1.  Nikola Jokic

Previously: 3
Denver Nuggets: 7-3

Last week, the Denver Nuggets won all four of their games and Nikola Jokic averaged 29.5 points, 15.8 rebounds, and 14.5 assists, producing one of the greatest individual weeks in NBA history.

Jokic is currently leading the league in both rebounds and assists while averaging 29.7 points. If the Denver Nuggets continue their winning ways and Jokic continues to average a near-30-point triple-double, then there’s no doubt in my mind that the “Joker” will win his fourth MVP award.
