The Vince Lombardi Trophy will go to the city of Philadelphia for the first time in history as the Philadelphia Eagles topped the New England Patriots 41-33.
The Eagles came out swinging scoring first and going up by three points in the first quarter and the Patriots followed suit with three points themselves.
Mistakes plagued the Patriots as the special teams unit which is considered among the best in the NFL, botched the snap, the hold, and finally the kick.
The Eagles scored on a Foles and Jeffery bomb. The Patriots then responded with a big run by James White to score and get within three points of the Eagles 15-12.
Then just when it seemed the Patriots were going to get the ball to try and take their first league of the game. Foles shot it up on a deep go route to rookie Corey Clement to take the Eagles down to the red zone.
The Patriots made a goal line stand but head coach Doug Pederson was not going to concede to just a field goal. Foles called signals but didn’t take the snap, instead he ran the route and took the throw from Trey Burton to extend the lead to 10 22-12.
The Patriots came out in the second half looking to get back in the game and on the first drive, Brady was finally able to find Gronkowski completing all of his passes to the big tight end capping it off with a touchdown.
The Eagles just didn’t let up as they took it all the way down the field and Clement delivered on a catch for a touchdown but wait… The catch wasn’t necessarily clear as there was question whether he had possession and his foot stepped out of bounds. Ultimately it was ruled a catch and the Eagles extended their lead to 29-19.
The Eagles in a perfect world would think that that was the dagger in the heart and they can pack it in. But the Patriots led by Brady went down the field and scored a touchdown on a long ball to wide receiver Chris Hogan to put the Patriots within three.
The Eagles then moved down the field yet again and were had a crucial third down in New England territory. The Eagles tried to convert on third down but couldn’t make the play as linebacker Marquis Flowers made the tackle and forced only a field goal.
The Patriots then rallied back on a drive led by Brady to Amendola which ended with a Gronkowski’s second touchdown reception to take their first lead of the game 33-32.
On the ensuing drive, the Eagles were looking to reclaim the lead and on a key third down converted it. The Eagles then decided on a fourth down to give it a shot and unsurprisingly converted it.
Now in the redzone on another third down play, tight Zach Ertz scored the touchdown and after more controversy, the play stood and the Eagles took the lead 38-33.
Brady was handed the ball to pull off another miracle comeback but then rookie Derek Barnett was able to get through and cause a fumble to give the Eagles the ball.
The Patriots were able to get the ball back and on the deep prayer it fell incomplete and so did the hopes for a sixth Super Bowl.
