Paris Saint-Germain came away with a respectable and hard-fought 2-0 win over Manchester City in Champions League group play. Les Parisiens now stand at the top of their group. After a disappointing 1-1 draw in their first group match, PSG needed to walk out with no less than three points against Man City.

The main highlight of the match certainly has to be Lionel Messi scoring his first goal in a PSG uniform. Messi found the back of the net in the 74th minute with an assist from Kylian Mbappé. Based on how Les Parisiens played, it’s clear that they came fully prepared. Manchester City did everything they could to overwhelm PSG, but it was PSG who managed to overwhelm them instead.

Taking the lead within the first ten minutes of the match gave Les Parisiens an advantage. However, in PSG’s case, when playing a tough club like Manchester City, it’s absolutely vital to be at least two steps ahead. It did prove to be difficult task; PSG knew it wouldn’t be an easy day at the office.

Solid defending and strong resiliency played a major role in the big win.  A total of nine interceptions and 38 clearances helped keep Man City from sending the ball into the back of the net. In addition, PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made seven saves. In Donnarumma’s case, this was his Champions League debut, so for him to make an impact is huge. Les Parisiens coming into this game well-balanced really paid off. Furthermore, PSG playing effectively as a team worked out quite well.

PSG’s next Champions League group match takes place on October 19. Les Parisiens will play Rennes next week before another international break takes place. On October 15, PSG takes on Angers before playing RB Leipzig at home in their next group match.
