Ortiz threw out the first pitch at the game between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees Monday evening to his former teammate Jason Varitek.
He ran onto the field to thunderous applause from Red Sox and Yankee fans alike.
After he threw the pitch, Ortiz addressed the crowd, stating “I want to thank God for giving me a second opportunity in my life. I want to thank the Red Sox, my real family. They have always been there for me. I want to thank all of you for the prayers. I really appreciate it…God bless you all! Go Sox!”
Ortiz went on to thank both his former teammates on the Red Sox and some of his former competitors on the Yankees for checking on him.
