The New England Revolution lost to New York City FC by a score of 2-1 at Yankee stadium on a Jonathan Lewis stoppage time goal.
Scoreless through halftime, the Revolution were playing well against NYCFC who are currently ranked at second place in the Eastern Conference table while New England sit in 11th place.
While the possession was controlledย by New York, Jay Heaps 11 were threatening all game out shooting the opposition 16-12, but were unable to beat NYCFC goalie Sean Johnson more than once.
The deadlock was broken in the 57th minute when a shot was taken on Johnson who batted the ball straight out to Teal Bunbury for a tap in and one of the easiest goals he’s probably scored in his life.
But NYCFC came marching back.
In the 77th minute, New York was threatening inside the box when a ball was played across the face of the net. The Revolution struggled to clear the ball and they paid for it when David Villa added to his league leading record of 19 goals with a nice finish in traffic.
Then in the 93rd minute the Revolutions season was summed up when Ben Sweats “cross” (that looked like more of a wayward shot) landed at the feet of the super sub Jonathan Lewis who showed why New York is where they are in the table when he buried it for the win.
Another tough result in a tough campaign thus far for New England who continue to drop close games.
Next up for the Revolution is the only team who has struggled more than them this season, D.C. United, who currently sit eight points behind New England.
This game will be played Tuesday, August 26th at RFK stadium in D.C. The Revolution will have to win this one to have any late hope of making the playoffs.
