NFLPA Sends Proposed CBA for Approval

The NFL is close to having a new collective bargaining agreement. The NFL Players Association voted on Wednesday to send the proposed CBA, which has been approved by the owners, to the full union membership for a vote.

The vote to send the proposed CBA to full membership was very close, 17-14 with one abstention. At least 2,000 players must vote to agree to the proposed CBA for it to be approved. The current CBA doesn’t expire until March of 2021, but owners want to get a new deal in place as soon as possible. It is unknown when the full player membership will vote on the proposed CBA.

“I have said repeatedly that there will be white smoke when there is white smoke,” NFLPA president Eric Winston said. “The one thing we’re not doing is rushing into anything. The one thing we’re not doing is rushing through this. Every ‘I’ will be dotted, every ‘T’ will be crossed, and when that happens, that happens.”

The proposed CBA calls for a 17-game regular season, more roster spots, a shorter preseason, a higher percentage of revenue for players, and upgraded pensions for former players. The $250,000 cap on earning for players when they get an extra game check for a 17-game season would be eliminated. Teams would also have one tag to use on players under the proposed CBA.

While we don’t know how all the players feel about the proposed CBA, we know that some players don’t like it.

We’ll see if the players approve the proposed CBA or if negotiations will have to start again.
