Heading into the home stretch, the NFC divisions are beginning to take shape; however, some are nowhere near over.
Division Leaders:
NFC East: New York Giants and Washington Football Team
Record: 4-7
Next game: Giants @ Seahawks on December 6th, Washington @ Steelers on December 6th
In perhaps the most evident example of the NFC East’s lackluster competition, the two teams leading the division both have first-year head coaches at the helm. Ultimately, both teams have already played each other twice, with New York taking both by narrow margins. Look out for a Week 17 slate in which the Giants play the 4th place Cowboys, and the Football Team matches up against the 3rd-place Eagles
NFC North: Green Bay Packers
Record: 8-3
Next game: December 6th vs. Eagles
Green Bay continued to run away with the division with a dominant 41-25 win over the Bears and all but claimed a spot in the playoffs. What’s next? Challenge the Saints for the #1 seed—and a first-round bye.
NFC South: New Orleans Saints
Record: 9-2
Next game: December 6th @ Falcons
Having demolished the QB-less Broncos 31-3, the Saints now look to preserve their 1st-round bye against a 4-7 Falcons team that may have picked up a surprising 43-6 win against a playoff-hopeful Raiders team but is still not very good. As far as schedules go, the Saints have a pretty easy one, so they should look to preserve their bye.
NFC West: Seattle Seahawks
Record: 8-3
Next game: December 6th vs. Giants
After a 23-17 victory against the Eagles that was not as close as the final score showed, the Seahawks look to challenge the Saints for the bye spot in the NFC race. They should pick up a win next week against a Giants team who’s QB situation is uncertain, but look out for the Rams (7-4) and the Cardinals (6-5) to challenge the Seahawks for the division.
In The Hunt
San Francisco 49ers
Record: 5-6
No, this is not a playoff team as it stands right now. In fact, this team would have to win five or possibly all six of their next games to sneak into the playoffs. With games against the Bills, Seahawks, and Cardinals in the coming weeks, it doesn’t seem likely. However, with a 23-20 win against the Rams, it isn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility; and the best way to continue that positive momentum would be with a victory on Monday Night Football, in the Cardinals stadium due to COVID-19.
