New York Giants need Devonta Freeman

Devonta Freeman.

The New York Giants signed running back Devonta Freeman, the team announced on Wednesday.

The deal is for one year. Financial details weren’t disclosed but Freeman’s agent Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the deal is worth up to $3 million.

Freeman was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 2014. The Falcons released him in March. Recently he visited with the Philadelphia Eagles but liked the Giants better.

“Devonta turned down more money from other teams because he likes the opportunity with the Giants best,” Rosenhaus told Schefter.

Signing Freeman was a good move for the Giants because they desperately need him. Saquon Barkley is out for the rest of the season with a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. Wide receiver Sterling Shepard has gone on injured reserve with a turf toe. Shepard will miss at least three games.

With Barkley and Shepard out the Giants need help running and receiving and Freeman can be a big help with both. Last year Freeman had 656 rushing yards and two touchdowns. In his career, he has 3,972 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns and 257 receptions for 2,015 yards and 11 touchdowns.

One negative is Freeman’s injury history. In 2018 he missed all but two games because of a foot bruise and a sports hernia. He’s also had three concussions, a PCL and MCL sprain, and other minor injuries to his lower body muscles.

Freeman needs to stay healthy. If he gets injured then things for the Giants will be worse than they are now.
