On this dreary rainy Monday morning in the New York area, the New York Giants added themselves to the list of teams with a coaching vacancy that needs to be filled.
After finishing the 2019 season with a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Giants fired head coach Pat Shurmur on Monday, ending his two-year tenure with the team.
Shurmur went just 9-23 in New York. His time at the helm lasted only slightly longer than that of his predecessor Ben McAdoo, who didn’t make it to the end of his second season in 2017.
Shurmur, by many estimations, was given a tougher spot than many head coaches. The Giants are in a rebuilding period. This past offseason, the team traded star wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. to the Cleveland Browns less than one year after giving him a $90 million extension. In 2019, the team also handed the starting quarterback job over to rookie first-round pick Daniel Jones, who took over for longtime starter and two-time Super Bowl champion, Eli Manning, after the team’s 0-2 start.
Working with the further development of Jones will be the No. 1 job of the team’s next head coach. It helps to have a young running back in Saquon Barkley, who in the last two weeks returned to the form he displayed in his rookie season.
The team also announced that general manager Dave Gettleman will remain in his position, contrary to speculation.
