The NBA is, and has always been, evolving. That never-ending evolution, which seems to be happening at a fast pace, is not only happening on the court but off the court as well. That is why we always find ourselves wondering how players in the past might fare in today’s generation.
Let’s focus on some of the NBA guards from the 1990s and see the “influence” if they were active players now.
Allen Iverson
Players today treat the tunnel walk to the locker rooms as a catwalk to showcase their passion for fashion. That’s why we miss Iverson. His hip-hop style was too cool or too loud back then that the commissioner was forced to issue a dress code. With the dress code somewhat relaxed today, Iverson would have gone wild with the threads.
Jason Williams
If you were nicknamed “White Chocolate” during your time, then you probably had some sweet moves. Williams and his “Street Style” basketball quickly caught everyone’s eye. It’s a shame that Williams did most of his dazzling passes and highlight plays a few years before YouTube was born. He would have killed it as a viral sensation.
Gary Payton
Gary “The Glove” Payton always had something to say. Whether it was trash-talking or not, he just had to talk. Too bad his “loudness” happened during the 1990s, which was well before the age of social media. It would have been interesting to see him appear on Instagram Reels or various podcasts.
Reggie Miller
Today, the NBA is all about shooting threes. It was not like that during Miller’s time. Remember, he was No. 1 in three-pointers made at a time when the three-point shot was utilized differently. Can you imagine if he played now? He would have dealt plenty of damage in an era where teams normally attempt 40 threes a game.
John Stockton
Stockton has the most assists (more than 15,000), and he got most of those by passing the ball to Karl Malone. Today, with shooters left wide open all the time, with more set plays available, and with players athletic enough to catch lob passes from all angles, would the pass-first point guard have more assists?
