Major League Baseball has suspended New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman and manager Aaron Boone, as well as Tampa Bay Rays manager.
Chapman was suspended for three games while Boone and Cash were suspended for one game. They were also fined an undisclosed amount. The suspensions are a result of an incident that happened Tuesday night.
In the ninth inning of Tuesday night’s game, Chapman threw a pitch near Mike Brosseau’s head. After Brosseau struck out, he exchanged words with someone on the Yankees. The benches cleared and players gathered at home plate.
Chapman said that the pitch near Brosseau’s head wasn’t intentional. He is appealing the suspension.
“To explain the whole situation,” Chapman said. “Let this be clear: I had no intention on hitting anybody at all. If you look at my career and you look at the years that I have played in this league, I’ve never had any issues or ever been in a situation where I’ve hit anybody on purpose. Of course, there were pitches that are close to hitters. But there was never any intention to hit anybody. I think it was a little harsh. That’s the reason we’re going to appeal the decision.”
Boone and Cash served their suspensions on Wednesday.
